Coral tuts at me repeatedly, giving out corrections left and right as I try and fail to create an illusion on the table. I bite my tongue, using the pain to focus harder on the image I’m trying to create. Coral gives another command, then flings the curtains open, flooding the room with even more light. I wince as the sun hits my face and the vague shadow shape flickers and then disappears. “FUCK!” I shout, unable to keep my temper in check after two hours of this shit.

Coral spins on me, her eyes livid, “Watch your tongue!”

I look up at her, my magic rising like a tide, “Watch what you’re doing! I’m trying to work with SHADOWS here. Opening the gods’ damned curtains while I’m working is just diminishing the shadows I have to work with. Are you intentionally sabotaging me?” I demand the last with a wave at the curtain.

She scowls at me and stalks closer, “How dare you?! You petty, ungrateful cur. I am trying to teach you how to be a lady and a good magic user. If you cannot make do with changing situations you are not worthy of your position.”

I take a step back and look away, not willing to get into a fight with her. “Fine, it seems I’m struggling with this too much, is there something else we can work on?”

She sighs dramatically and shakes her head, “I suppose. Your language needs work.” She gives me a stink eye, “Though, come to think of it, have you ever spent time in the company of a gentleman?”

“Uhhh, Lord Graves generally joins us for dinner, and he’s been helping me with dancing.”

She shakes her head, “Not what I meant,” she smiles slightly, a bit of maliciousness in her eyes, “In that case, I think we should seek out someone to do a little trial run.”

“Meaning?”

Her smile widens and she turns to the door, “I think we should seek out Lord Graves and the three of us shall go on a stroll.”

My eyes widen, “I don’t know if that’s-“

“It’s a fine idea,” Lord Graves says from the door.

I jump and spin, he’s looking at me curiously and Coral is grinning cruelly, “What?”

Lord Graves raises one eyebrow at me, “I think it would be a good idea if you were to get some experience out in the real world so to speak. I already have some errands to run in town.”

“Excellent!” Coral says, grabbing my arm roughly and I tense, “Give us a little while to get ready and we’ll meet you in the foyer.”

I look at Graves pleadingly, the treaty on my lips to beg for him to change his mind. Coral drags me toward the door and Lord Graves grabs her arm, halting our motion altogether.

“Actually,” he says slowly, meeting my eyes, “I think it would be best for Miss Callam’s learning if she and I were to run the errands ourselves. Without your company,” he looks at Coral on the last statement.

“But that’s complete-“ she cuts off as Graves raises his hand, putting it in her face.
